Site Safety Leader and Industrial Hygienist

The Chemours Company headquartered in Wilmington, DE has a Site Safety Leader and Industrial Hygienist position available in Pascagoula, MS. This is a highly visible, key role within the Company and the Operations function. This position will report to the Plant Manager II.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Manage the safety and industrial hygiene programs and work to integrate these programs into business operations to promote and stimulate awareness of safety and industrial hygiene

  • Written Programs: Develop, update and work with unit resources to implement written Safety and Occupational Health programs for the site, including, for example, Hazard Communication, Hearing Conservation, Personal Protective Equipment, Respirator Protection, Ergonomics, Indoor Air Quality, Lab Standard, Lead in Construction, Ventilation and Management of OSHA Expanded Health Standard Chemicals (including Benzene and Asbestos), Safety Audits, Safety Reporting, Safety Meetings, Central Safety, Injury Classification, Safety Procedures, etc.

  • Hazards Communication: Coordinate the development and dissemination of employee safety and health performance metrics and communications.

  • Exposure Control - Provide safety and IH direction to manufacturing and lab re exposure prevention and control of chemical and physical hazards (noise, heat stress, etc.) Special emphasis to be placed on carcinogen control programs. Investigate chemical exposures and recommend upgrades

  • Asbestos: Provide safety and IH oversight to site

  • Noise: Conduct noise monitoring (surveys and/or dosimetry) and provide IH oversight to Hearing Conservation Program. Select hearing protection.

  • Central Safety, IAQ Team, Site Safety Activities and Ergonomics team resource. Lead Site Safety Leadership Team

  • PPE - Provide continuous improvement to system to select, procure, and maintain PPE.

  • Respiratory Protection - Serve as site respirator program administrator

  • Coordination with Medical: Work with Medical to determine the appropriate medical surveillance for site employees. Provide oversight on post-exposure surveillance as required.

  • Safety and Illness Investigations / Classification: Investigate potential injury and occupational illnesses and act as appropriate to properly classify per OSHA and corporate guidelines.

  • Legal, Product Stewardship, and Other Support: Coordinate record searches for pending litigation, NIOSH requests, epidemiology studies, etc. Provide IH support to customers and on product stewardship issues as appropriate.

  • Serve as TSCA Coordinator for the site.

  • Auditing: Serve as site liaison for inspections of OH program areas of responsibility by outside auditors. Provide S&OH audit support and leadership for the business unit

  • Analyze data and evaluate current performance and trends

  • Plan and lead self-assessments to identify opportunities to improve performance

  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of site processes and how they affect compliance

  • Assists emergency/crisis and spill response activities and notifications

  • Drives and maintains continuous improvements of the site EHS managing processes and procedures.

  • Participates, or ensures representation, in relevant site incident investigations to address/ determine root causes, key factors, and corrective actions.

  • Coordinates the schedule and execution of corporate second party S&OH audits at the site.

  • Interfaces routinely and networks with other site, business, and corporate EHS resources to share and leverage information as appropriate.

  • Manages the budget for the Site’s safety cost centers.

  • Learn and have oversight of EHS related compliance software.

  • Provide oversight and development for site resources to help ensure technical and functional skills within the manufacturing and service groups are effective for regulatory compliance.

In order to be qualified for this role, you /must possess/ the following:

  • BS degree in safety, Industrial Hygiene, science or engineering field plus 5+ years’ experience in the field beyond the BS degree; experience in manufacturing preferred

  • Certification (or eligible to be certified in 1-2 years) by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene is preferred.

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification or work towards certification is a plus

  • Sound technical and regulatory based safety, occupational health, and process safety management knowledge, including knowledge of regulations, laws, and standards (specifically OSHA and PSM regulations)

  • Knowledge of highly hazardous chemicals and processes preferred

  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently balance multiple priorities with the proper sense of urgency

  • Self-motivated with strong interpersonal and organizational skills to independently complete tasks and work well in a team environment

  • Demonstrated written and oral skills - presents information and ideas in an articulate and organized way

  • Ability to anticipate, plan, develop, implement, audit, and improve systems and processes in the safety competency

  • Ability to collaborate and network with site, business and corporate resources

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.)

  • The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, self-starter who can work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision.

  • The successful candidate will be one who can deal with fast changing and sometimes conflicting priorities and who possesses strong organization and planning skills. Additionally, by necessity, the successful candidate will be one who has strong interpersonal and mentoring skills and can work well in a team environment
